The question often comes up, "What files do I have to back up in order to back up my e-mail?" OK, so I don't have a life. So what?

Microsoft's Outlook Express, the e-mail program that comes free with Internet Explorer and seems to be the most popular, stores e-mail in a series of .DBX files.

Each user on the computer will have their own set of e-mail files. Each "Identity" within Outlook Express has its own sub-set of e-mail files. To find yours, do Start --> Search --> For Files or Folders and search for files or folders named "*.DBX". There will be 7 or more .DBX files for each user and each user's Identities on your hard drive. THESE are the files you need to back up to back up your e-mail.

Now, this is a backup of JUST your e-mail, NOT your Address Book.

Your Address Book (or books) is in a .WAB file somewhere on your hard drive. Search for it like you did for the .DBX files and that, again, is another file (or files) you should back up from time to time.
